What a rare treat it is to sample an early landed Cognac of such age. The nose opens with radiant orchard fruits and crème brûlée, lifted by orange peel and a touch of vanilla. On the palate, stone fruits swell, held in check by a firm grip from the silky, viscous spirit. Caramelised apple follows, joined by warm ginger and a dusting of nutmeg, before a finish which lingers on spiced apple and gentle oak.
The Frapin family has cultivated vines in Grande Champagne since 1270, making them one of Cognac’s oldest houses. From their Château Fontpinot estate, every drop is distilled on the lees and matured in Limousin oak within cellars built by Gustave Eiffel’s ironwork.
