Tasting Notes
The nose opens with a captivating blend of sweet fruit and peat - coal smoke curls around notes of caramelised walnuts, damp rubber, and a burst of red berries. The influence of the Oloroso cask is immediately apparent, lending layers of dried fruits, roasted nuts, and a subtle oxidative richness. On the palate, a dense, oily texture carries a deliciously discordant mix of coal smoke and butterscotch, where charred wood meets chewy caramel. Juicy raisins and a jammy red fruit character add depth, playing against earthy, ashy tones. The finish is long and smouldering, with a final flourish of sweet smoke and a touch of salted caramel.
Distillery Information
Ruadh Mhor, meaning 'Big Red' in Gaelic, is a heavily-peated spirit made at Glenturret, Scotland's oldest licensed distillery. Previously only seen as a component in blends, in more recent years it's stepped into the spotlight, gaining a name for itself as an exceptional single malt in its own right.
