Rob Whitehead

“Toasted grains proliferate on nose and palate with granola and syrup-drenched sponge cake. The time in ex-Margaux wine cask has studded some glacé cherries in the cake and given extra wood-weight to Craigellachie's already not-incosiderably girthy finish!”

Tasting Notes

Craigellachie’s muscular spirit shows emerging aromas of fresh hay, malt and fireworks, before orchard fruits and a softer floral side of rose petals and Port. The palate is notably thick, with more barley, eau de vie, underripe vanilla and blackberries before a puff of wood smoke and digestive biscuits appear. The finish is long and one can feel the spirits oils lingering and showing a touch of peppery spice.

Distillery

Craigellachie Distillery was founded in 1888 by Peter Mackie and Alexander Edwards. Mackie later went on to build the Lagavulin Distillery on Islay. Craigellachie village is situated near the River Spey, where it is spanned by Telford’s famous experimental bridge.

Jonny McMillan said: “I remember the first Craigellachie I ever tasted was a Cadenhead's bottling matured in sherry, I was really taken with the huge mouthfeel and oily structure... Having seen round the distillery with it's gigantic stills and worm tub I can see where it comes from!”
