Doug McIvor

“Very fruity on the nose, reminiscent of dolly mixtures with a dusting of coconut but with an earthy quality giving a nod to the distillery’s generic peaty note. The palate brims with confected fruit with the peatiness cutting through again. The oak is controlled giving a sense of the whisky’s maturity. Gloriously balanced!”

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes Highland Whisky at it’s best. This rich, turfy Glen Garioch harks back to the days of the distillery’s own floor malting and direct fire stills throwing out earthy aromas of Highland peat bogs, roasted barley, dark chocolate, honeycomb, leather and cigar leaf. Exceptional. If one manages to get past the nose, the palate gives a massive whack of herbaceous peat, resin, oak smoke and tar, moving to dried fruit, cocoa powder and dates. Spice rises on the finish giving lasting waves of smoke and turf. They don’t make whisky like this anymore, and after a dram one wonders why not?

Distillery

Founded in 1797, Glen Garioch Distillery is one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries, siting just outside the town of Oldmeldrum in Aberdeenshire’s fertile barley plains. After a period of closure, it was revived in the 1970s. Production has since remained constant.

Jonny says: “Glen Garioch is another of Scotland’s slightly overlooked distilleries in my opinion, I’ve had the pleasure of trying many casks from Glen Garioch going back to the 1950s and there are real moments of glory that shine through… A distillery that deserves more attention.”
