Jonny McMillan

“My tasting notes for whisky are often inspired by flavours evocative of my favourite snacks when I was a child, and this Ruadh Maor brings to mind my all time favourite crisps; Frazzles! For those not from the UK, please seek them out on your next visit; smoky bacon flavoured corn chips and they taste exactly like peated Glenturret!”

Tasting Notes

This robust Highland malt does an uncanny impression of Ledaig; the nose offers fat smoky aromas of bacon, seaweed, some citrus and new leather, it’s remarkably coastal for a landlocked distillate. The palate continues this theme with powerful peat smoke developing into tobacco, some rich fruit, over ripe blood orange with a distinctly coastal tang. A long finish brings some oak with a little spice mingling with the fading ashy smoke. A rugged Highlander that would make excellent company on a long hike through the Grampian mountains.

Distillery

This heavily-peated Highland whisky hails from one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries, just outside the picturesque village of Crieff. Although this small distillery is known for its unpeated style, it also produces a powerful peated distillate known as Ruadh Maor.

Doug says: “Once known as The Hosh distillery in a previous set of buildings on the site, Glenturret rose to prominence under the ownership of the Fairlie family who revived it in 1957. It was sold to Highland Distillers and for a few years was home to the Famous Grouse visitor experience although it has now passed to new owners.”
