Rob Whitehead

“Sweetly scented, yet with a vibrant hazelnut character on the nose, this delicious Teaninich has slumbered peacefully in ex- Tokaji casks and shows all the commensurate stone-fruit and rich citrus compote on the palate. Apricot jam, overripe plums, candied peels and orange curd abound with deft oak providing balance. A thrilling triumph of Húngaro-Scottish cooperation!”

Tasting Notes

This soft Highland whisky has been re racked nto a 136 litre Tokaji Gonchi for just shy of 12 months, and the impact on the spirit is profound. Aromas of ripe apricot, wood smoke and sultanas, followed by a luxuriously thick mouth feel and plenty of plum notes. A full-bodied whisky often gives a long finish, and this is no exception with vanilla pod, peach and some spice appearing alongside. A gloriously full-bodied dram which leaves one Hungary for more.

Distillery

Teaninich, located in the northeast Highlands, was founded in 1817. It produces malt whisky to meet high demand from blenders. Unlike other distilleries, Teaninich uses a mash filter rather than the conventional mash tun to extract the worts.

Ronnie says: “If you ever find yourself driving North from Inverness on what feels like a super highway try to stop off at Alness and see if you can fish for salmon in the morning followed by a visit to Teaninich in the afternoon. You might not catch a fish but you’re certain to have a fascinating tour of this modernised (2013) large distillery, the product of which are surprisingly rare to find.”
