COLLECTIVE #1: THE PIONEERS Crafting exceptional spirits while reducing impact on our planet’s natural resources

Written by Ryan Chetiyawardana

The subject of sustainability has been close to our hearts for many years. In fact it was one of the foundational pillars of the Lyan company when we started a decade ago. We had been doing work in the field for some time prior to that, but it was exciting to showcase how the practice of being considerate about our impact on the planet did not need to be at odds with luxury, or the wonderful world of food, drink, culture and travel that we wanted to retain.

One of the key aspects that we tried to champion was that firstly, every little helps, but also that no two problems were the same – one size fits one. We needed to encourage people to not feel dismayed or put off by supposed barriers (or crucially, not paralysed by shame), but to also look at the problems they faced and the aspects they could be passionate about addressing.

It has been so encouraging to see the changes over the last 14 or so years since we have been involved with the topic – everything from the fact it is now a mainstream conversation to how there has been so many wonderful efforts, solutions and educational plays developed all around the world.

So it was hugely exciting to partner with Berry Bros. & Rudd on their first ever The Collective #1: The Pioneers. I have known, been a fan of, and worked with the team at various points over my career, and with the long roots and deep ties that are inherent to the company, it was so exciting to hear about the latest efforts to champion the good work happening around the world, and to use their reputation and expertise as a means of promoting this.

And this was the crucial aspect for me – there are so many wonderful efforts and practices being employed, and through The Collective #1: The Pioneers, we are demonstrating that this does not come at a sacrifice of the things we love; sustainability can be realistic, eclectic, and absolutely delicious. Each of the distillers making up the Collective #1 are Pioneers by doing things differently and tackling the difficult problems with ingenuity. As a result, the flavour levers they get to pull are more diverse and together we’ve been able to highlight some gems that really expand the world of mature spirits offering an incredibly exciting insight into the future of deliciousness!
